After Hurricane Katrina destroyed the major East/West bridges on Hwy. 90 here in south Mississippi we lived with utterly miserable traffic problems. We had to travel dozens of miles out of the way to get to work or shopping. Well, due to a yet to be determined cause, thousands of motorists are having flashbacks to 40 months ago. A bridge (that survived Katrina) on a major artery was cut today when a barge rammed the supports for a bridge that carries more than 35,000 vehicles a day. A 60' section of the bridge collapsed into the river as a result of the impact. As the traffic was stopped while the drawbridge was up no lives were lost. The drawbridge operators car was parked on the section that collapsed and fell into the river.
The resulting diversion of traffic will cause congestion on all surrounding area roads. Now the remaining 4 North/South arteries will have to absorb the flow of traffic. WE DON'T NEED THIS CRAP! It was probably a Halliburton barge on the way out to refill the hurricane machine....
In all seriousness, that really does suck for your area. I spent a couple months at Keesler in 2006 and it was a major pain with all the bridges out...and I wasn't having to commute to work either. Hopefully they'll be able to drop another span on the existing piers and have it back in business before long.
I think our bridge here is Lake Charles Louisiana is about to the same thing. But it will do it on its own. It is on I-10 and they may condem it soon. This will be a big problem here too.
