erratic idle...
It just had the timing chain replaced and the head machined as the timing chain slipped and somehow caused coolant to **** its way out into the oil. The mechanic did a bad job of explaining and said it was fixed. With that solved the new problem arose... the inconsistent idle.
If I ignore the recent work, could it just be throttle body or vacuum hoses needing a refresh?
If I heard that from a mechanic, I doubt I'd be utilizing his/her services. The timing chain could have allowed the valves to impact the tops of the pistons, but unless the engine was running at a pretty good clip, and broke the valve into pieces that penetrated the cylinder walls or head, there is no way a slipped timing chain can cause coolant to mix with the oil.
If coolant mixed with oil, it could have ruined the bearings, as it forms a goo that doesn't lube too well, and plugs oil passages and pickup screens.
Your idle problem may be IAC, leak, fuel pressure, injectors, filter, air filter, spark plugs, plug wires, coil, distribulator [we don't know vintage] and probably 183281615278+/-4 things. Yeah, I made that number up.
Spark, air and fuel. Remember those things, they will be of importance later in the game...

Dryrotted vacuum lines, clogged up stuck open PCV valve, leaking vapor recovery system hoses, leaking vacuum bake booster diagphragm, are good vacuum leak suspects.
Sounds like your so called mechanic was pulling your leg, or was trying to run one by you & if so, maybe not darken his door again!!!!
