I was looking over my snowblower, and the outer and inner surfaces of the barrel around the rotating (2nd stage ) blade are dinged and rusted. Probably from gravel, much as I try to keep it adjusted up.
Anyway, I'm looking for thoughts on what to do.
Inside seems to be bare metal -- don't recall if it was originally painted. Any good ideas for a surface treatment and how to apply it? ( I really don't want to take it apart).
Outside, I thought that I'd sand it a bit and use some kind of Rustoleum product. Any thoughts on this?
Try Fluid Film. It's a corrosion inhibitor and it will also keep snow from sticking to the machine. I use it on my snow shovels and no snow ever sticks to them. Ever. And it does work well as a corrosion inhibitor.
clean and paint the barrel and augers with a good high gloss paint. also, make sure the augers are free on the shafts, and your shear bolts are not bent.
shut off the fuel, and run the engine till it runs out of fuel. you can also use a fogging oil, but i don't .it is also a good idea to drain the fuel tank, this way you don't have to worry about the fuel in there going bad over the summer.
when you prep it for use in the fall, get some snow release spray and give the inside of the barrel and augers a good spray down.
