Unhappy Breakdown.....need help pls...

My truck did the same thing today it did in Houston 3 weeks ago. That's another thread, but anyway, I'm cruising at hwy speed, all of a sudden engine starts to gag, choke, loss of power, spittin out black smoke. EGT gauge is pegged when I have my foot into it and it won't get out of its own way. (DP is on 80 econo)

I limp to an exit, the first thing I do is check my oil level, b/c in Houston it seemed I was low on oil (2 qts) and my HPOP was not getting enuff pressure ( I was also pulling a heavy load), added oil and it has run fine since. FF to today, my oil is perfect (pressure is normal at filter housing) so I'm ruling out a problem w/ HPOP right?

Everything else seems normal, I checked the valley for any fuel or oil leaks, none. Fuel filters are fairly new, I have the ITP in-line. So I start to limp home on the backroads (DP is back to stock) and notice it is still running rough (not as rough when DP is on 80 econo). EGT's are maybe a lil high, but I did notice turbo surge??? on stock setting?? Whenever I switched DP back to 80 econo, immediately truck started running rough and would settle down when I switched it back.

Right now, truck is at my shop, idles a lil rough, and when I give it gas, it sounds like a gasser with 4 spark wires disconnected.

PS, I noticed where the two pipes connect to the Y thing, that there is another boot that goes down to the valley??? I never noticed that one before, but it has oil and soot all over it?

There are two boots that go into the valley, one for each cylinder bank. Check them both. Is your boost pressure normal?

Check your injector harness wiring. The passenger bank loom is notorious for chafing and shorting out where it goes over the valve cover. That could cut off firing of the passenger side bank, or enough misfire to disrupt things.

Might ck harness at valve covers May be loose. Oily deposit there on boots is probably normal. Clean & tighten Edit - Jock beat me to it- I type slooooowwww

Yup what ^^^ said, but it theres a problem with the harness I am not sure the injecter will fire to make the black smoke and high EGT's you said you had.

I was alittle low in oil also but knock on wood its still the same old truck.

It also sounds like you are not getting enough air to the cylinders. Check all boots to make sure they are tight. What does the air filter look like? In the 80 tune it is trying to push more fuel then you can burn. Take a good look at your turbo wheel, see if there is any play in it.

lets not forget running out of fuel will cause ICP to spike and run out of oil....can you watch your fuel PSI while driving???maybe the fuel pump is slowly headed south on ya ...just because the bowl is full of fuel means the pump is working..these things can idle all day on a bowl full of fuel...if the truck died..there must be a code...

Get the codes pulled. It'll help point you in the right direction and may save some frustration.

I agree, black smoke= either, too much fuel or too little air.

Jay, I have a AE coming this next week. When I get it, bring your truck to my shop and we will find out what is wrong. 1 1/2 hrs away from you. Just south of Lake Charles.
