I've been reading the postings for help with my 4-wire trailer harness. The lights use 1157 bulbs and wires from fixture are red and black. Which wire, red or black connects to green and yellow. I've got running lights, brake lights and turn signals, but my question speaks to which bulb element do I use for running lights, the big element or the smaller element. I've hooked it up so the blinker uses the smaller element mostly because it faces the clear plastic lens pointed at the ground and I figured it burn out quickest so it must not be used for running lights. Friend tells me its the opposite.
While not specifically knowledgeable about that exact setup I do know this. The hardest thing for the elements in bulbs is the heat up and cool down of turning on and off. Turning on and staying on is not that hard on them under "normal usage for the application for which they are designed." I would tend to think that the larger element would be better for the turn signal and would handle the constant temp change better while the smaller element would be fine for less "wear and tear" of just being turned on and left on.
Just my .02 worth.
Someone else may have more specific info.
Your the first to explain why the bigger element should be wired to turn signal, and it seems reasonable. Based on this, I'm swapping the red to power the signals.
You can usually tell by the amount of illumination of the bulb.
Bright= Signal
Dim = Running
