my new rig

hey everyone i'm glad to be back in ford diesel group. i had a piece of chevy diesel for a while. what a mistake. anyways i just bought a 83 250 6.9 with the auto tranny and i don't know much about these and i was just wondering if they where any good. i only paid 800 for the truck and the guy i bought it from said the tranny had been rebuilt right before he bought it and he had only put about 4,000 miles on it. i figured i couldn't go wrong for the money but i was just wondering about how these tranny's hold up pulling. thanks

The one thing you really need to know about this truck - do NOT use the block heater!!! Actually, go ahead and crawl under the truck and locate the block heater in a freeze plug on the passenger-side and towards the rear of the engine, then goa ahead and pull the electrical cord off it so no one can use it. Reasons for this is that '83 and '84 trucks (and I think some early '85s) have an issue with the block cracking around the heater, most '85s and all later IDIs have the engine castings redesigned so there's more metal in that area to avoid the cracking issue. If you think you will ever need a block heater, purchase either one that goes in the bottom radiator hose, or one that is a heated pad and sticks to the bottom of the oil pan, those will get the job done equally good but will not cause block cracking.

You will love it. The C6 is the last of the real autos. I wouldn`t have a stick if you paid me. Just my opinion.

Couldn't tell ya which is better, one warms up and sometimes circulates the coolant, whereas the pads warm up the oil - ideally you want both, but in Missouri I think a pad will do you just fine.
