My truck has the chuffing sound through the exhaust, and runs rough. I have had both valve covers off and observed the valve train while the engine was running. I didn't see anything amiss but I wouldn't know what a bad valve guide would make a valve do. How would I be able to tell if it was a bad valve guide, or a burnt valve? This engine also has bad blow by but didn't have any when i bought it 100 kms ago. Thanks.
I just did a compression test and I got on the drivers side bank from the front 420, 475, 460, and 440. on the pass side from the front I got 420, 490, 450, and 410. These numbers dont seem to point to a valve but I dont know. Would the bad valve show significantly lower then the others?
Try servicing the CDR valve, it might help with the blowby, but these motors are gonna have blow by due to their high compression.
How old are your injectors (if they still have grey paint on them and the lines, they are the originals)? Leaking injectors can cause these motors to run rough. Also, air intrusion before the injectors can cause these motors to run wierd.
It starts cold pretty well. At -10c it takes 15 seconds of glow(bosch glow plugs) and it starts 1st or second glow if I put my foot on the throttle. It also smokes abit but not too much when cold. I also have a manual switch for the glow plugs.
Would that get rid of the chuffing sound? If it was a valve would it been shown has a low compression number? I have unplugged the injection pump and had someone crank the engine, and I could hear a puff through the exh.
run a bunch of diesel kleen through it.take the fuel filter off and fill it all the way up with diesel kleen and then see how she does.i think it will be night and day.could be a dinked up injecter
