Brake line leak problem

The right front brake line on my 56 F100 which has a la baron front end with disc up front is continuing to leak after I have bled the brakes . It appears to be leaking around the bolt which attaches the fitting to the caliper(banjo fitting). I've tighten it several times and am afraid to continue tighting fearing I might strip something. These are new parts with new copper washers on either side of the banjo fitting. Anyone seen this before and have any suggestions? The leak is only a drop or so in 24 hours but still not something I want to ignore, Thanks in advance.

as much as you don't want to hear this ??? I'd take it apart... inspect the banjo fitting and bolt for burrs or irregularities...replace with new crush washers and reinstall... don't know the torque specs...but torque it as speced and rebleed the brakes....

that should fix it if there isn't a problem with the bolt/fitting or calipert housing

hope it helps
John

I agree with John. Its worth taking a look at. More than likely its a burr or a piece of crud. I've also seen it where the copper washers get stuck together and you end up two instead of one.

It it possible the bolt is too long and maybe bottoming out before getting completely tight? Or the shoulder on it is too long and the threads are bottoming before getting tight?

Good luck
Bobby

Unless you bought copper washers made specifically for this service, they are likely not soft enough. You can anneal them by heating to dull red with a propane torch, and letting them cool (opinions differ on tossing them in water or air-cooling). It makes them noticeably softer so they conform better. Make sure they are the correct ID and OD, too.

Ross is right about the ID and OD of the washers. There are several sizes and there is very little difference between them. You can't tell by looking. I had the same trouble and when I got the right washers it was OK.

It only takes a grain of sand between the sealing washer to cause a aggravating leak. Mine leaked and I took it off and found a couple grains of sand had fallen in when I installed the lines. Cleaned them up real good and have not had a problem since.
