VIN and unknown ID tag decoding

I picked up a pretty nice and original appearing '74 F-100 XLT short box over the weekend, 131k OG miles with a 302 and automatic. I was looking for a truck to use around the farm but this one is way too nice and solid for that. So, much to my wife's dismay, I have started a driver quality restoration...

So, my question is what info can be had from my VIN and this unknown ID tag that i found in the glovebox.

VIN -
F10HUU87515

ID TAG -
C5ZF B
B 5AD

Thanks in advance!

F10 - F100 2/W/D

H - 390 2v

U - Louisville, KY assembly plant

U87515 - 1974

No idea on the tag. Can you describe it?

VIN - F10HUU87515

ID TAG -C5ZF-B B 5AD
Welcome to FTE

F10 = F100 2WD

H = 390 2V

U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant

U87515 = 1974
---------------
If it was a 302 originally, the VIN would be: F10G not F10H.

G = 302 2V // You sure it's a 302?

302 = 6 valve cover bolts per side / 390 = 5 valve cover bolts per side.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The C5ZF-B ID tag is not related to your truck.

Is the tag rectangular or triangular shaped?

Prolly triangular = carb tag.

C5ZF-B = 1965 Mustang Auto-Lite/Motorcraft 2V Carb.

This carb will fit your engine (302 or 390, whatever), why it may have been in the glove box.

Doesn't really matter, because the same 2V carb kit was used 1962/74 on all V8's: D4AZ9A586A (Motorcraft CT499D)

btw: 5AD = Assembled the 4th week (D) of January (A) 1965 (5).

6 bolts, so it is a 302...

That's a shame, the old truck looks so original. The tag is a poly triangle. The carb tag makes scene though as the PO had a '65ish Mustang sitting in the yard...

Thanks for the help with this...

Where did you find that VIN?

On the registration?

Or on the Warranty Plate, which is located on the left door face below the latch?

Peeps swapped left doors due to damage, forgot to swap over the original Warranty Plate.

If this is the case...the truck may have come with a 302 as original, and the VIN on the plate will not match the VIN on the registration.

Take a look at the transmission's oil pan...how many bolts? 11 or 17?

302's thru 1977 did not come with the C6 A/T (17 bolts), all were C4's (11 bolts).

The 390's were all C6's if an A/T was installed.

Ergo: If you found the VIN on that plate...it will not match the VIN on the registration.

I got it off the title, i'll walk out and check...

The plate on the door matched the title, after the VIN it reads -
117 F104 0 4 G 17J
05000 214004

I haven't made it to the transmission yet, they may have to wait for tomorrow...

Ok, my curiosity got the better of me. The transmission pan has 14 bolts...

117" Wheelbase

No COLOR Code

F104 = F100 2WD / 5,000 lbs. GVWR

0 4: 0 = Medium Green Vinyl & Medium Green Cloth // 4 = Styleside Pickup, Bench Seat

G = C6 Cruise-O-Matic (not what's in there now)

17J: 17 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 3.25-1 / non Limited Slip // 3300 lb. Rear Axle capacity // J = Power Steering

5000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

DSO: 214004:

21 = Atlanta GA Ford District Sales Zone Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

4004 = Domestic Special Order number. The truck was special ordered by the original purchaser, it was not "just bought off the lot."

Since there is no COLOR code, the truck was originally painted in a non standard color, why it was a special order.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 transmission pan bolt holes = FMX Transmission from a passenger car.

FMX's were behind 302 or 351W engines, are you sure it has a 302?

351W = 6 valve cover bolt holes per side.

No 351W engines in F Series trucks until 1981.

No FMX transmissions in any F100/250's.

The only F Series trucks to use the FMX were 1973/77 F350's with the 300 I-6.

Look on the drivers side of the transmission case (near the round servo cover) for the FoMoCo transmission ID tag.

The tag will have a three letter code, then a space or hyphen, then one or two more letters, possibly followed by a number.

Like this, for example: PHB-E7 (1973 Mustang 302 FMX), or this: PHB-Z8 (1977 LTD II 351W FMX).

Once you post the code, I'll tell you what the trans came from...and what specific engine it was used with.

Wow, lots of great info there. How else would i tell the difference between the 302 and 351W?

I'm not familiar with the FMX transmission, nor do I know how it landed in my truck...

It will be a little later before i can get back under the truck to look for that tag, is there any others i should check while i'm there?

Both the engine and transmission have been changed, because it originally was a 390/C6.

Now you have either a 302 or 351W with an FMX trans from a passenger car.

The transmission ID tag code will tell, please post it.

I couldn't find the tag, but I did find these numbers on the case -

EOAP-7006-C

I couldn't cross that ID number over, I'll have to call someone later today and find out. It's 1:10AM PDT here.

It's either this:

1980/81 Ford LTD (Crown Vic) & Mercury Grand Marquis: FMX.
------------------------------------------------------------
Or it could be...I'll let you know for sure later.

Two possible engines were used: 302 or 351W.

From the info I have E0AP-7006-C is an FMX.
FMX have an aluminum converter housing, and tail shaft with a cast iron center section.
AOD’s are all aluminum with non-removable converter housing.
