I was just given a 1989 F250 With the 7.3l. The only problem is that it won't start. He said it just shut off when he was going home. I am also new to diesels, so does anybody have any thoughts as to what it could possibly be?
Could be a lot of things.
first check and make sure you have voltage and your fuel solenoid is working.
Make sure you are getting fuel to the IP check at the schrader valve by the fuel filter.
4 to 6 pounds pressure and I think 1/3 pint in 10 seconds.
This is where I would start post back and tell us what you find.
I know i have voltage. the key switch doesnt work right now so i jumped the solenoid and it did turn over. I don't have a pressure gauge but i did disconnect the fuel inlet and fuel did come out at a rapid rate so i'm thinking that might not be the problem either. I won't be able to work on it again until friday night though, so if you can get me a list of other things to check, i would appreciate it
Where you need to check for voltage is at the fuel solanoid on the injector pump with the key on unplug it you should hear a click.
When you try to start it are you getting a little smoke out of your exhaust.
Yeah, there were small white puffs of smoke coming out. And should i hear ticking coming from the center of the engine. It ticks a bunch of times then stops
Is it your gp controller ticking it should click on and hold for about 10 seconds when it clicks off is when you try to start it.
If it is smoking it is getting fuel and that is about the only thing that should cut it off going down the road. what did the previous owner do to try to start it.
Get somebody to turn it over while you hold the valve stem in on the schrader valve and see if you have pure fuel or have some air in it.
Caution here make sure your batteries are fully charged and don't crank on it for more than 20 seconds before cool down periods starters are not easy on the wallet.
Either a bad controller or they work off of resistance so could just be a couple bad plugs and that will cause a no start condition but will not shut it down while it is running.
If it was mine and I just aquired it I would change the filter and fill it to the brim with a good diesel additive. then make sure both tanks have plenty of fuel. Before it will start your glowplug system is going to have to be working and not just clicking. you may get by plugging in your block heater but that doesn't always work.
Make sure your batteries are up to snuff ditto the cables and starter as these are very important on these engines they have to spin fast or no start that diesel has to be 500 degrees in the cylinder to fire it will not start turning slow.
Try plugging in the block heater a couple of hours and then see if it starts. If it does, that would indicate glow plugs. Like starmilt said, the on/off clicking should start after 10 seconds or more. If the clicking starts sooner then one or more GPs is not working. Make sure you use only Beru replacements, as other brands swell up and break off.
It is possible that the PO ran it out of fuel and then switched tanks and couldn't get it started and gave up.
Got her runnin turns out there was air in the injection lines. I just gotta get the rest of it fixed. Now I get to replace the brake lines and adjust the key switch. Thanks for your help guys.
