Brake lights staying on

My 92 F-150 has a problem with the brake lights staying on. It's not all the time, sometimes they work like they are supposed to, then sometimes they are alwways on, and sometimes they come on all by themselves. I've checked and cleaned all the light sockets, and I changed the brake switch on the pedal. I had to install a switch on the dash so I can turn them off and on, but this is a pain to use everytime I step on the brakes and I'm sure it won't pass inspection. One shop said it's 79.00 an hour to find the problem and fix it. I can't afford that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you confident that the pedal hinge is not worn or the return spring is not bad and allowing the pedal to drift away from the brake light switch?

Well no, I didn't know that might be an issue with it. I'll check it out tomorrow. What can I do to fix it if it is the problem? Are there parts available to fix it?

Do you have an electric trailer brake controller?

No trailer brake controller. I did have a trailer wireing harrness plugged in between the connection for the lights under the bed, but I took it out, without any change.
I checked my pedal for any play, I couldn't pull up on it, so that seems to be ok.
