F100 4WD differential
I understand that the rear differential on a 2WD 68 F100 is narrower than the front tire track by about 4 inches and that by using a differential from a 73-79 you can make the front and rear the same width. Is this also true for the 4WD trucks. I have a 68 F100 4WD with a bad Dana 60-3 semi floating differential. It should be a lot easier to find a replacement from a 73-79 if they can be made to work.

Your info is correct. To make the later housing work you will need to cut the spring pads off and move them inward. Same goes for the shock mounts. Rather than trying to salvage the spring pads I'd suggest you buy a new pair from one of the vendors. They sell for about $25 for a pair. I'm planning to do this swap on my 72 F100 2wd later this year.
BTW, try to find a rear from a 76 or newer. The housings are heavier and will stand up to more abuse.
