I almost hesitate to ask what you were doing when this happened.... But for "research" sake I will ask. racing? pulling? towing? all of the above over time?

Pulling 27,000 GVW up a 6-7% grade in the tow setting... Open diff up till now. I think that may have been part of the issue, too many one wheel peels hooking up over the years...
Put a new set of 4.30 gears and a true trac in it now... Dont know why I ever waited to do gears, like a whole new truck.
One wheel peels, are usually hardest on the spider gears, that the axle shafts slide into. Ive done my share of destroying spider gears. Usually in half ton or lighter driveline. Then once the spider gear splits into parts, they go though the gearset and do their damage. Not saying thats what happened to yours, but usually one wheel peels, lead to spider gear damage. However, in retrospect to that, a truck that makes as much torque as you do, with a sudden "hook up" could be what caused the initial break on that part of the gear set. Then when you were workign them up the hill, it was enough torque applied, pulling your weight, to finally make an event.
