I have an 86 F150 4x4 with the twin i beam front axle and when i back up the passenger tire goes haywire. like the tie-rod is broken, but its fine. i mean, the tire tries to go its own way, even with my sway bars.
What is the problem??? i know that i need a solid axle, but i dont have the money right now.
Are you trying to shake the tire while the truck is on the ground? You need to jack it up with the steering wheel locked. Try to wiggle it up and down, and side to side. You might also check your wheel bearings, axle shafts, and anything else tied into the axle. Springs, bushings, everything.
What happens to the stearing wheel when it "goes its own way"? Does it pull the wheel inward or out? Is it moving left to right or out and in (from the top)? What happens going forward?
I am surprised that there is no affect to the steering wheel while the wheel moves so drastically, there has to be another suspension peice failing. Maybe where the axle assembly is mounted to the frame? I would get a second person to see what's going on under there while you move (very carefully) to the rear. Did you mention what happens when going forward, if anything?
i would take it to a front end shop you trust.you don't want any of your front suspension or steering components failing while you going down the highway.had this happen once, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy(tie rod broke). crapped my drawers. good luck
Have you jacked up and checked for and unusual movement on that side? Pay attention to that wheel when you jack it up, if it makes any odd movements it could be your hub bearing.
