had the stumble miss that plagued me much of last year. finally threw a code finally last fall, P302, when stumble became much worse. cyl. 2 misfire.
changed out the plug wire and plug. problemo gone. ran like a raped ape, real freeway on ramp Lexus killer after the fix.
it's back, finally had a break in the rain and wind, ran the scanner on it. only this time P301, cyl #1 misfire.
i can only guess i might have pulled too much getting the new wires on a couple years ago. believe they were Autolites, could have been MC. going to order MCs from Rockauto if they still carry them and change the #1 plug.
I'm so PO'd at the rig, i could dump it. but it runs so well with so much power for years until the recent headaches.
miss on #1 causes far more shake rattle and roll than miss on #2???? must be position of rotational forces.
can't even be driven the way it's now. not enough power to get out of it's own way.
off to the RockAuto site. at least their still in business.
looks like the economic dump has been good for the aftermarket auto repair parts and auto repair shop business. no one wants to risk buying new.
no warranty, no dealer, no new parts.
keeping the Aero, may be on the soup lines myself shortly.
I thought changing plugs was bad, UNTIL I tried changing the wires (that side are even worse!)
Actually plug Nos 1-2 are the best plugs to do IMO. Just need a nice swivel fine toothed ratchet.
Good luck & may the Aero God shine on you!
Well thats a bummer 96.. I just changed my plugs tonight. They were all fine except they were plain old autolite 765 non plats.. with about.065 gap on most. I can get all the plugs on the drivers side with a 2 ft extension and swivel. The rear one from under the hood..The other side is just easy..96 I hope thats all your problem is! Come to think of it I never had a wire or plug issue on 4 vans. Never replaced a wire either, just plugs.Scary. Oh yea I'm headed for the soup lines right behind you....
what's that saying? fix something and really screw it up
was running great 2 years ago but i had too much spare time on my hands and was reading too much Aero FTE. hadn't chanced the plugs and wires in years so for some fun ordered the parts.
Hell starts with idle hands. the miss stumbles started from then on.
Motorcraft wires and plugs only this time. Blood is more important than price
my first set of OEM plugs years ago at 100k miles were about 0.100" gap and ran fine. could almost stick my finger in the gap. some spark on these EDIS waste spark systems. all that pseudo capacitor voltage buildup in the waste gate second plug reverse jump system really packs a wallop. will jump about 2 inches at least. tangled with it once, gave me a sore elbow for months from the jerk back.
this is going to be a least a 2 case weekend once we get some sun and warm weather.
AeroSex under the hood is fun but Liquor is Quicker

P301 - 306 codes may easily be Cranck sensor pos. issue. Check its pulses with o-scope. Air gap, bent a bit pole ring may cause some fluctuations considered to be missfore by ECM. Crank speed is only one sourse for ECM to understand is there missfore and what cylinder. So check it.
Do you really feel missfire before P0301 appeares?

Yeah you can feel it, but sometimes only just. Last fall I had a 302 it was barely noticable but i could just feel it under light cruise conditions. No cel at that time, not until it got quite bad . It would not miss under load; only under light throttle. Cause in that case was a loose plug. Before that I'd had a 306, that misfire was caused by burnt plugs (worn Bosch plats). That misfire occured mostly with cold engine for the first 3 mins & then it would dissapear with warmed engine. The cel came on when I'd barely noticed there was any misfire at all, just a slight hesitation when I pushed on the gas to pull away cold, that was enough to set it. Finally I parked it in the rain for a few days & that confimed to me that the plugs were done, missed bad enough on start up to get a blinking CEL (very bad). So I would agree, it depends which cyl is pooched; some rattle the engine a lot more .
I still say a bad FPR will throw a PO301 (cyl #1 misfire) code. That made mine go away. I seem to be getting about 4 years on them. At least test your fuel pressure.
replaced the #1 plug wire and plug
runs great.
cleared the code and headed off to buy a new laptop for camping.
plug looks fine, like new. i'll post photo later
will ohm out the plug wire later
end look fine.
only 5k miles on the new ones
nice thing about this OBDII SFI is that the PCM shuts off the offending cyl FI when the miss is bad enough to set a continuous code. no cylinder fouling or CAT burnout
