I'am working on my grandaughters boy friend's 88 Ranger with 2.9 V6. It has the square coil. Can someone tell me what size socket/wrench I need to get the four bolts out that hold it to the bracket? I've tried everything , even all my ingnition wrenches, and can't find one that fits.
Thanks, Tony
I thought they were metric, but neither 5mm nor 6mm worked. A 7/32 6-point will work, but it too is a little bit sloppy, though a 3/16 did not fit at all. I've had to replace both on my 87 and 85. One new coil was defective, and I chased a miss for days. Put the old, mildly burned, one back in, and the miss went away.

Thanks for the reply tomw . Mystery solved, it's a 5.5mm. I guess only the good sets of sockets have it because mine didn't. Had to get it from my son's set.
I have never heard of a 5.5mm socket. Europeans use odd sizes - 7 9 11 and, it seemed to me, that American manufacturers used even sizes. Guess they split the difference on this one. Maybe I have observed something which is not really the case...

A little over 2 thousandths. I think that FoMoCo 'metircized ' the 7/32 -- or somebody did. I don't think that 5.5 mm are all that common in tool sets.
Just chiming in because I fought the same issue when I had a Ranger
