Hey all - I have a small leak at trans seal where driveshaft exits. Is this an immediate concern? Not even dripping, just more damp around the seal. I'm kinda freaky about leaks, is this a major repair? Thanks,
There should be a seal there. Local tranny shop put one in my s10 for $40. Probably cost 100 in this truck, everything for these trucks are $$$$$$$$$$$$
Pinion seal is on the rear end. Tranny output shaft seal???? Not shure of the correct term. Any tranny shop could do it in bout 30 min. I wouldn't try it yourself. I put 2 in my s10 and they leaked. Tranny shop job has been good a couple of years now.
No Bill, the pinion seal is on the rear and front end, where the driveshaft goes in. I wouldn't worry about it if it is not leaking. Only a little wet, I would leave it alone.
IMO its a pretty simple seal to replace, and is similar to replacing a pinion seal. But like said above, its an output shaft seal. Remove the driveshaft, and then the yoke, then there should be enough of a lip on the outside, to get a small punch at it, and tap it out, and go around the ring, while tapping, dont just try and do it all from one side. Have a catch pan under it so you can catch some ATF, then whipe the area clean with a lint free rag, (so as to not leave any residue) and then tap the new seal into place (going around the ring again, this is a little tricky to start) and then install the yoke, and then the driveshaft.
The only part you may not have to do, and I dont know this because Ive never been under a 2wd super duty, is the driveshaft may have a slip yoke instead of a fixed yoke, like the 4wd trucks have. If thats the case you just remove the driveshaft, and then the seal, since the yoke is attatched to the shaft.
