Hello all,

First of all I should tell you I am new to this forum. Just bought a 1992 F-250 4x4 and will be doing a lot of maintenance to it, since it looks like it has been neglected for a very long time.

I have 2 questions for today:

So I was underneath it last night giving it the first oil change it has had in a long time and was just shining my trouble light around under there. I noticed that the shaft going into the front transfer case is leaking. So - how hard is it to replace this seal? I can do most things myself - I have done brakes, front axles on smaller cars, some pretty serious work on engines, but I have not worked on 4x4s before. Is this likely just a seal? Would I need special tools? Is there a procedure online I could see?

Also, I get grinding when downshifting to 2nd as I coast to a stop. Transmission is a ZF. Would this be a synchros issue or should I not be downshifting like I do on my car?

try to match the rpm's with the gear and the road speed if theirs no grinding then its your synchros, but the fact that it only happens when your down shifting kinda makes me think your linkage is out of adjustment
