Sector Shaft Removal. HELP!

How does the sector shaft come out of the gear box housing? 57-60 F-100. I've been trying all evening, everything else came right out. There are no more bolts or nuts anywhere. It gets to the point that the end of the shaft is flush with the seal. I've tried using a socket and a hammer to get it out with no luck. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have a stock box they want to sell? Even if it's just the empty housing.

Box has to come apart to remove the shaft. At least on the f1. I erringly meant the steering shaft.

The box is cast one piece. All of the covers have been removed, it's like the end that holds the gear is either too loarge to come through the hole. (it's lined up corectly) or the end of the shaft has been mushroomed and won't go through the bushings. I'm going to try to take it to work tomorrow, clean it up, and press it out if I have to.

Sector shaft bushings and grease retainer have to be pressed out, but the shaft should come out, but after all these years it may be stuck. Have you tried soaking it in PB blaster or equivalent?

No, I haven't I will clean it up in the parts washer at the shop tomorrow. I was just outside and the end of the shaft is slightly flared on one side. I'll see if I can't clean it up with a file, lube it and tap it out with a brass punch. I may be using the Toyota box after all.

It crossed my mind if tapping on it had mushroomed it a bit. Parts washer will help. I wish I had one at home, I got all full of oil removing the crankshaft from my flathead today.

*UPDATE* I brought the gearbox to work today. I was able to use the parts washer to clean the box up. It came out pretty good. I was able to clearly see where I, or some previous owner, this box is not original to the truck, mushroomed the sector shaft pretty good. I used a fine grinder wheel to remove just enough material to get the shaft out with the press. I then used a file to clean up the splines, and polished it up with a rubber wheel. It looks really good. The sector shaft roller is in excellent shape, the shaft itself is almost as good. It looks like other than wear items, the only piece I need to replace is the worm gear. My shaft is straight, but the gear is chewed up. I wonder what happened because the sector roller is so nice. The new worm gear is 69 bucks, but the whole assembly is 129. Money is tight right now so I'd like to do it myself. Look for a new post requesting help. Thanks havi for your advice, John
