I have a 2003 F250 Super Duty with a 7.3L and have a question about the air cleaner box and filter. The box is square with a removable cover on the top with the name Volant on it. The filter unit inside is similar to a K&N cone filter in shape but is fluted metal screen with what appears to be fiberglass mesh between the layers of screen. The Letters AFe are on the narrow end of the cone on a rubber end cap. Is this an original Ford installation or has someone replaced the box and filter with a after mkt rig? The owners manual for the engine has a different code for the element and I'm wondering if someone replace the paper element with a washable one. This element is dirty and greasy feeling though the guage does not say that it is clogged. I have removed the element and you can see some daylight thru the filter material, but I believe it needs replaced anyway. Truck has 98,000 mi. and I don't know how long the filter has been on the engine. Sorry to be so long winded, but I wanted to give as much info as poss. to get my point across.
Thanks for any help.
John
You can wash the K&N if you want to take the time. I dont know about the box, it could be stock. What I recommend is doing the 6637 mod. The stock boxes tend to leak and dust engines, and the 6637 mod is a positive seal. The 6637 also lasts longer and flows better. It can also be found for around the same price as the stock replacements.
If it's a cone type filter it is aftermarket -Go on Volant site - I think these are re-usable (washable) but be careful not to let it get too loaded up - Probably better to get a throw away that will fit in there and just replace it once a year
Thanks for the replies. I have done some more checking and apparently the Volant box and APe filter were added when the Banks intake and exhaust were installed by a previous owner. Thanks for the info and help.
