I have a '96 F150 with the I6 and the e4od. It struggles to get to 70 mph and stay there (like no power) but the engine runs smooth as silk. I determined the truck has a 3.08 gear ratio with 35 inch tires. What can I do to get more out of it? It has 130,000 miles has fresh tune up including fuel filter. It seems as if it shifts really early ( i changed the trans filter @ tune up as well) but I suppose it's not designed to spin a lot of rpm's. Especially sine the motor is only rated @ 145 HP? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Johnny
Simple, put 4.56 gears in it. This truck was under geared from the factory.. should have had 3.55 gears, 4.56 will restore that final gear ratio with the big tires you have.
I too have the I6 and E4OD. I ended up swapping the 3.08 rear end for a 3.31 gear which was a definite improvement. I went with a 3.31 because that was all I could find at the time. I have the stock tires and could'nt imagine having 35's with that combination.
First off......Welcome to FTE!!
You'll certainly find the help you need here.
If you want more info on your engine, you can also find lots of good info in the engine specific forums. In your case... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum52/
The I-6 is not a high revving engine by any means and there are not a lot of mods available for it, but it is a fantastic engine and many will say one of the best engines that Ford ever produced, but it produces it torque at lower rpms. I suspect that your tire size and gear ratio is the cause of your frustration, but will let others with a little more knowledge about larger tires pipe in.
All the best!!
i have 33s and 4.56 gears and it's perfect but i have a high reving 5.0 so with 35in tires and the low reving 300 i6 i would use 4.56 gears and you'll be much happier
