whats going on???

hey everyone. its seems of late when I take my truck for a drive and i go back and start it it just barely cranks over and if it doesnt fire up it just wont start at all. so I put a new battery in it thinking everything was fine and it did it again. the alternater is only a year old. I need to get an after market voltage gage for my truck the old one is stuck right in the center. do you think this could be a starter problem or something. thanks for any input. 75 f250 460ci

Check battery to Frame ground and Motor to Frame grounds. For that matter check all your ground spots.

check your timing, if it is to far advanced when the motor is hot it will turn over slow.

I will check all the ground areas today as well as the starter itself. I did check the timing and it is good. thanks for the help. if the starter does need replaced, is the a good aftermarket one the you would recomend.

If you have headers on the truck, you might try some header wrap, or fab some kind of shield around the starter as well. Heat kills these things.

I only buy replacement starters, alternators, etc. from NAPA. I also buy the lifetime warranty when possible. I haven't paid for a new starter, alternator, or plug wires in years.

Just my 2 cents but, I would spend the couple extra bucks and buy a brand new starter. I havent had good luck with reman starters. Even from Napa. The one I have now is a Remly I do believe. Made in China but what isnt anymore? Got tired of replacing the starter every couple months. The last one I got 3 weeks out of.

Also another option, I recall some saying that there is a possble Gear reduction starter that will swap into the 460's. That really helps compaired with the direct drive starters.

I could be wrong on that so make sure to verify.

If you are having probs cooking starters(due to excessive heat or timing issues), use a starter from a newer 460(early 90s I believe), with the smaller-body case. I was cooking starters with the headers on my 429 so I took the delco starter, which had a solenoid on it like a GM, off(which was factory in 70) and replaced it with a smaller body unit and voila!! problem solved.....good luck
