Hello. Rebuilt 351M in a 74 F100. there is no timing tab on the block. So i wonder if anyone knows a way that i can time my engine correctly other than just listening to how it sounds when i turn the distributor. Any help is greatly appreciated.
The more advance your timming has the better, you could try the following asuming you have the right -desired fuel ratio and other adjustments,
1. you could advance your timming until the engine pings, then turn it back 2 degrees
2. you could advance your timming until its very hard to start your engine then back it up 2 degrees, try it out and if it pings retard it until it doesnt.
I always use the 2 one...then I measure where i left the engine at...
Mud rat is correct. Even if you get it timed well by ear, you need to have a point of reference not only to help in that process, but also so that you can do routine checking.
I have an 81 with the 351m in it. The motor is a factory reman that came without the timing tab. I timed it by ear and ran it for almost 3 years. It did pretty good. About two weeks ago I finally found a timing tab. Retimed motor with the tab. WOW. Keep looking for the tab. It will be worth it. Tuning the air/fuel was so much easier once the motor was timed correctly. I found my timing tab on ebay. The whole motor was for sale and the guy sold me just the tab. CHEAP!!! Keep looking, they are out there!!
