Where is a good spot to fasten the other end of the break away cable to the truck? They say not the hitch. Can I use a snap end like they have on a dog leash for easy connection/removal??
The cable is already closed looped. I just want to know where and how to connect it to the truck. Maybe they are trying to say don't loop it over the ball before hitching up??
I've always hooked it to one of the safety chain loops welded to the outside of my hitch; if the whole hitch rips off I'm gonna lose the chains anyway.
Where in PA? I'm originally from York, MANY moons ago..............
Never hook the breakaway to the same hitch that the ball is part of. That way, if the hitch were to "fall off" the truck, the breakaway will still trigger. I attach my trailer to the reciever, and the breakaway to the bumper hitch. For the gooseneck, I attach the breakaway to one of the bed corner hooks.
For a tagalong, I just run the loop end through the ball hole on the bumper and use a double ended snap to attach it to itself.
If you do that with the trailer plugged in, be aware that some controllers don't take kindly to reverse voltage and will do a "Mission Impossible" on you (self-destruct).
If the whole hitch were to fall off, the only thing that the trailer brakes are going to do is add to a spectaular crash! I would also hate to lose the key to my break-away cable! I use a clamp with a screw to attach it to my hitch where saftey chain goes.
The purpose of the break away switch is to activate the trailer brakes in the event both the hitch and the safety chains fail. So if you connect the switch cable to either the hitch or the safety chain attachment points, you have defeated the purpose of the switch.
