I have a 97 f-250 with a 460 and e4od trans. I added a cold air intake, MSD coil, cap and rotor, throttle body spacer, and I was wondering if that affectes the computer any. Do I have too reset it and how. I am using a stock ignition module....and am getting code P1351 and P1359. Does this mean the coil is putting out too much for stock module? Bothe codes are for circuit malfunctions. I did have many problems with the truck not starting after driving. What do you think could be the cause of these codes. Thanks
Is yours a distributorless ignition? I am guessing not since you said coil and not coil packs. I am guessing that there is either a bad ignition module or a loose connection somewhere. Using a 'hotter' coil doesn't normally affect an electronic ignition to my knowledge. I'll put what the codes mean for others' input:
'Resetting' the computer and clearing fault codes should be able to be done with your code scanner, the only other way I know of on most vehicles is to remove the battery negative cable and let it sit for a while and then re-connect it.
I guess the OEM coil was an "E" coil. Did you replace it with an MSD E coil? Reason is that the new coil may draw a lot more amperage to develop a hotter spark. I dont know if the 97 electronics will have a problem with that or if it will see the extra current draw as a problem. Someone may need to research the meaning of those code carefully. On earlier coils, it was sometimes necessary to use an extra resistor in the circuit for that reason-----that may or may not apply now. LOL
thanks guys....im stumped too....someone in another forum said something about the modules with a grey cover and a black cover...that the grey cover ones may cause a fault....for some reason...I dont know.
Yes.. the black vs grey ignition module issue has come up on just about every Ford forum, you must use a TFI module that is the same color as the original, there are internal wiring differences between the grey and black modules that will create open circuits and throw codes.
