it should bolt right up I'm not sure about the electronics though. Torque converters may be an issue I know that you cannot use a 5.4 torque converter with a 4.6 transmission. not sure about the windsor converter. just to be safe replace both if the converter will bolt up. Check with rockauto.com they have both engines listed and I compare parts all the time if they have the same part number your good to go.

I don't know how much trouble you would run into but there have been some posts on FTE that talk about various accessory drives either not mounting up or being mis-aligned. I strongly suggest that you stay with the original engine family. Apples with apples and oranges with oranges is usually the best way to have the fewest problems.

'97 Econoline code 6 = 4.6 V8
'97 F150 code W = 4.6 Romeo
'97 F150 code 6 = 4.6 Windsor
My manual does not state the plant that the Econoline engine was manufactured at, the code seems to indicate that it is a Windsor built engine.

I believe the answer I gave in the post earlier would caution you. I suggest that you verify with the mechanic/shop that ALL accessories would be correctly placed, mounted and aligned without additional cost to you.

You really need to be certain regarding the accessories. You can get a flywheel from a salvage yard or transmission parts sales company or even AutoZone.

Here's one for a Navigator, new for $50.00 and if you order the wrong one you can exchange it.

I know this is an old thread, but this statement if frequently made and is incorrect. One cannot reliably know the engine from the VIN. My 8th digit VIN is a 6, which would lead one to believe a Windsor 4.6L, but in fact, I have a Romeo with 11 bolt valve covers.

Best way to know is the engine code often found on the driver's side valve cover. Or just count the valve cover bolts.

Not a van . . . 2000 Ford Expedition XLT, 4.6L V8, Romeo, but again, the 8th VIN digit is a "6"

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN codes)/Ford/VIN Codes - Wikibooks, open books for an open world, from this, someone replace the engine then

Plus the driver's side valve cover shows "0G846AA", which indicates the engine broadcast code is VIN 6, Romeo plant, 6 bolt flywheel . .. . see here: PowerTorque® Remanufactured DFXF - Long Block Engine | O'Reilly Auto Parts

Just check that website. Then read the details of the description from O'Reily's. It states, VIN 6 . . . . Romeo plant . . . 6 bolt flywheel. This pretty much proves that at least some of the VIN 6, 4.6L's came from Romeo plant with 6 bolt flywheels, 11 bolt valve covers, and all the other specs of Romeo 4.6L

There are also some minor valve train differences.
Can I tell what motor I have by the 8th digit in the vin number?
