Garbz has a point, but if you put the same amount of modification to each of the motors listed, I think the 351 would be more suited to your 4X4. the small blocks are not known for their torque unless you can find a HiPo engine to rebuild. An interesting aside to this arguement is fuel economy. In the '80's and '90's, I was the maintenance supervisor for a corporate farm and we bought two Ford passenger vans to transport our field workers.one with a 302 and the other with the 300 I6. One time the company procured a bunch of tickets in the nose bleed section for a Seahawks football game. They gave them out to the employees and even supplied these two vans to get there from just south of Portland to Seattle. I drove the van with the 302 because one of the other supervisors thought the 6 would get better mileage. I do not remember the exact mileage numbers now (the 6 got in the middle teens and the V8 got in the low 20's) but he had to stop for fuel twice and I only had to stop once for fuel. So you see that you pay for all of that torque. Steve
302 is a lot snappier better highway engine. If he has 4.11 gears and intends to spend alot of time in the mud Id go W/ a 302. If the truck is to be used as a truck Id use a 300.
The advantage of the 300-its a truck engine! + no modifications neccisary!
The 302 was designed for cars. Sorry its a great car motor, but in trucks? He wants to know what he can put in....A 289,302,351W,240,300 or a oddball 200/250 six W a 81 up bell. A fun mud truck would be best off with a small block. a working truck a 300 all day.
I had a 70 f-100 with a 302 that was OK, but gutless when it came to power. I've owned a 69 with a 300, a 91 with a 300 EFI, and now a 66 with a 300. The previous two would pull whatever I wanted. Had a load of concrete on a trailer and that was the first time the 91 started to act like she might night pull it up a small incline from a dead stop. I would lose ground going up hill though on the highway and would always need to down shift. I have a 390 core but have never driven a truck with one. I would say go big V8 with a c6. Swap it in, change the steering column and get rid of the clutch. Its only money, you can make more.
Do mud boggers and rock crawlers use manual transmissions? I figured most would use autos so they can maintain constant traction/forward motion. When you hit the clutch and shift the tires would slow or stop and lose momentum right?
most use autos. The torque multiplication of a torque converter helps them out. Most people cant shift a manual hard and fast. Especialy a 4 spd ford as theyre kinda vague and balky.
300 is a truck engine. I've owned several trucks that've had 300's. Our mustang has a 302. If My truck were a toy to play in the mud and on the rocks.........351W and a C6.
A truck is a tool to me, I'll stay inline.
