Wierd Truck

I posted a little while ago that my transmission felt funny, today I was driving about 10 mph, and as soon as I let off the throttle the engine instantly stopped running. It didnt stall out... it just instantly died. I put her in neutral, fired it up, and it runs fine.

Could I have issues with my torque converter locking and unlocking? This could explain such an abrupt engine death and funny feeling trans under light throttle conditions?

Short of having something that can get manufactor specific codes, I would suggest going to a shop and see what they say.

Could be the IAC not holding the idle, but that usually doesn't happen when you're driving.

its bizarre there are no codes thrown or nothin, but it was odd to say the least. It wasn't like when an engine stalls... I mean this was an abrubt instant stop. Made kinda wierd noise... thats why I'm suspecting trans issues more than anyhitng.

Wierd Truck

Hi There
Well talk about weird trucks, My 99 250 lariat would stall everytime I plowed. The last time I went to plow it also just quit out on me while driving down the road. I also put into nuetral and it started right up. Then 8 miles down the road it just died. Had it towed to ford and $400 later it was the wire and clip leading to the crankshaft sensor.

Know i think Im having a problem with the cops. lol

Most of the time I have the truck in tow/haul mode around town. The 5.4L is much more responsive when the RPM's are higher (1,300 vs. 1,800).

When u say that do you mean it shouldn't perform better with the O/D below 50? The shifts are much more precise and it doesn't "flutter" for lack of a better term.

I have a friend up here lookin at it and he said it sounds like a bad throttle position sensor... that when those go bad it does funny things to the engine and transmission.

What is this crank sensor I just read about?

Will, with it not in OD, you will get more power because of the gearing, but it shouldn't change the shifts, it should just keep it from going into OD.

Yeah, it can, but that's pretty rare.

That's the sensor that tells the PCM that the engine is turning, and where the crankshaft is, in terms of timing. If that sensor suddenly quits, the engine will stall. Might be worth a check to see if the wiring is OK on that. I think it's below the AC compressor - at least it is on my '01 V10.
