Does it make sense to do this anymore? I've read that "newer" cars and trucks don't need it and it might actually do more HARM than good.Any opinions?
I just bought a low mileage '98 E-150 in showroom condition and would like to keep it that way. If it is OK I'd like to rustproof and undercoat/soundproof the truck. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
I just bought a 95 F150 in superb condition. I will be applying a rustproofing system. Rustproofing is used to fill the voids between metal surfaces. Overlap joints are the first places rust starts. From there it migrates to the flat surfaces. Rustproofing is a fluid material that flows under metal seams through capillary action. Undercoating will not enter these areas. Undercoating is only an external product. You will not be able to hit all the vital areas with it such as inside box rail supports that are used to strengthen floor pans. Have a look under your truck and you will find all kinds of shapes of metal. The undercarrage is made up of- Im gessing here-some where around 50-80 peices of sheet metal. Most of these are joined using a lap joint and spot weld. Rustproofing I believe is the first step to rustproofing. Once this is done I would apply an undercoating on all flat surfaces if only for the sole purpose of reducing road noise. Keep in mind that undercoating will not stick to any surface that has a rustproofing material on it.
I have an F-150 STX with just under 15K miles. Is undercoating or rustproofing a good idea? I want to make sure I take care of it for years to come. I see so many F150's with rusted and I do not want to become a victim. Thanks!

JMO ..keep it clean ,,,protect the hidden areas with a light weight oil ...Do it once or twice a year ...
POR15 has a coating that is awesome for undercoating and is the most durable coating I've ever seen. My company uses it for PD blowers for heavy corrosion applications and almost always is the blower in new condition with very little wear on rotors.
can any of these products be bought local? ive tried the 3m undercoating and spray in bed liner in a can and both have chipped off and started rusting. im not gonna try the brush on bed liner stuff on my rockers. i had stripped all the paint so made sure i got all the rust off. should i prime it before i apply my underbody stuff? thanks
