This number is actually tracked. It is not a part of the unemployed figures commonly reported. When added to those, it totals close to the 13% number that economists worry so much about. Do a lil' searching, its quite revealing.

That's actually not a bad idea,,,, Unfortunately, I think this whole ugly mess is just getting started!

There is no way that they can truly know! My hubby is an long-haul owner/operator, and when he's not working, he doesn't qualify for benefits, as any self employed trucker knows. So, when he has to park the truck, they have NO idea that he's not working!! And there are millions of O/O on the road,, well USED to be on the road. Double their number and we may be a little closer to the truth!

I wonder if guys like me are included in that number? I've had a job in town for years, but I got laid off in October of 2008. One of the reasons they gave me (among many others) was that they felt I would be better able to weather it out not having that income, since I had "other things going". I know of a lot of farmers and their spouses who had the same situation thrust upon them. These people (small farm operators) don't work in town because they're greedy. In a lot of those cases, the job in town and the spouse's job are what keep the farm in operation.

i saw an article in the paper on monday stating that the actual unemployment number is closer to the 18.4% mark, but that the gooberment idjiots are reporting it low to keep mass frenzy at a workable level.

I don't think self employed individuals show up in those stats, either.

If you think unemployment is bad now wait until they raise corporate taxes and instate the carbon cap and trade system.

My little town has been hit as well. The resort and casinos have had a hiring freeze on for a while.

You know it is rough when you can run an ad in jan 2008 for a housekeeper and no one shows up and here in March 2009 you have grown men, teenagers, housewives, you name it, about 70 plus in the last month or so just stopping in asking for a housecleaning job. It is awful. I know so many of these people are stepping out of their comfort zone. But they just need something. I have seen a rise in the police bringing me homeless men and families. (I let them stay a night for free and make sure they get fed and their clothes washed if they need it) There is a rise in people seeking my few apartments because they are losing their homes. I have people who actually "live" here in a motel room because they cant afford a "house" and now all the affordable housing is gone. I see many coming in here and want to trade work for a room. After talking with them they were casino workers, store clerks, substitute teachers etc. It is a sad sad day in America but aslong as those in charge fail to unveil their yes it will just get worse.

That's a really good thing for you to do. It might not save everybody, but it could give someone a chance to breath long enough to make a difference down the road. Good for you.

Likely not, I'm in the great white north! We don't have the problem with illegals so bad. Should be hiring mainly born and raised Canadians though!
