Hey guys, this is my first time on this forum and I'm looking for some experiences. I think I broke my 96 F350's front axle. Either shafts or ring and pinion.
So here is the story. I was on my way to work and I had the hubs locked in (forgot about them). It wasn't in 4x4. I made my second turn and all of a sudden it sounded like something had fallen off the truck and was being drug underneath me. I pulled over and checked, couldn't see anything. I unlocked the hubs and there was an instance of noise and then the truck was fine. I drove it home and haven't messed with it since.
So now to the questions. Do you think I broke the shaft or the ring and pinion? Has anyone broke either of these before by riding down the road with the hubs locked? Is it even allowable to drive on hard ground with the hubs locked?
first off i highly doubt that you broke a shaft or the anything inside the diff, ring and pinion should all be fine from running down the road... unless you ran it out of oil. the front gears are reverse cut. i would start by checking out the hubs and see if one broke of let go (common problem) second i would check your axle shaft u-joints.
they can go just like anything else, alot of things come into play with stuff like that like when was the 4wd used last how often were they greased. whats most likely is that they were seized up in one spot and when they were forced to turn with the hubs being locked they let go...
So ya, the bolts backed out of the yoke nearest the transfer case, prompting the drive to shaft to fall off and turn aimlessly on the transmission cross member. Should have LOOKED before I did anything else but it was cold out and I'm lazy. Guessing was easier. Feel free to make fun and call me names.
hey no problem... we've all been there trust me. you'll want to put some red loctite on those bolts so that doesnt happen agian, and that too is a common problem thats happened to me a couple times.. shaft never came out but the bolts backed off quite a bit
