Hey, join the club that seems to never stop searching. I also have a 78 with a short bed but I only need to replace on bedside. The only problem is that they don't seem to be anywhere. Except for a few shops that might have some overstock laying around which I have run into but the people would not ship it so I was s.o.l. I am thinking about going to a flareside since the style they used on the 78's actually goes back to the 50's and lots of companies make nice reproductions of these beds. Sometimes you can find a good NOS tailgate or MISC part for them. They actually make fiberglass fenders for them too. The only problem is $$$$$$$. Let me know if you find anything. If you want I can give you the names of some places if you want to check out flareside beds.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
I don't know what kind of trouble you are willing to go to get one but here are a couple of websites, rustfreeparts.com, crazieddiestruckbeds.com, and #####.com.
Hey,
I live in northern VA too and I have the exct same problem. I jsut bought an '84 F-150 and the rear wheel wells are rusted, passenger side all the way through. I can feel rust cracking under the bed liner too, afraid too pull up it because of what i might see under there... Since I'm only 16, and purchased the truck, gas, insurance etc.. myself, I dont have a whole lot of cash to throw at this problem. If you find an answer or anything, could you give me a holler? e-mail is wrcguy02(No Email Addresses In Posts!) . Thanks.
Eric
I too have been looking for a bed for my '78 F150 4x4 in N. Illinois. I've decided to give up and build a flat bed. It's actually going to work out well as I can build my rollbar into the frame, and attach a removeable canoe rack, and build in room for a pair of exhaust stacks behind the cab.
I read what you are looking for. I live in MN theres a place in duluth MN called Texes rust free parts. If you look up in the web yellow pages under rust free parts in Duluth it will pop up. Unforturly I dont have the # That would be your best bet. I also have a 1978 ford @ a 1972 @ have used him,and he is reasonble and may deliver?
