That is what i guess for talking to my Brother in law about needing to replace the plugs.
Just under 90K, third plug passenger side is gone.
Truck is on a flatbed to one of my best friends shop. His mechanic said he has done heli coils on them before and had a work van that lasted over 40K and then the guy totaled it.
I have pushed him to read the TSB and look at timeserts. But, he just told me book time looked to be 20 hrs to pull the head.............
CRAP!!!! not what i needed this month, guess it is a good thing i didn't book my vacation last night.
i thought i saw a thread about somoene putting timesert in without pulling the heads (it may have been a motorhome and he did it for piece of mind), i cant find the thread. if i remember correctly he had very detailed information about how he did it. If anyone can help with that it would be appreciated
i use the lilsten or leslie orsomthing like that.they are a solid insert.have done about 20 inserts so far.and have had no problem.the kit comes with a vacumee hole that hooks to a shop vac that sucks out the chips.a bore scope would be nice to have to inspect to make sure all are removed.the hole job takes about 45 min.the kit cost me about 450 $
"Oldusedbear" is the guy I think you would like to correspond with. Maybe you could send him a private message if he's allowed the feature to work on his profile.
He says he did all 10 cyls Heads on. He came across as meticulous and thoughtful in his write up.
I discourage any kind of traditional "coil" style inserts as they do have a tendency to stick to plug and back right back out at next plug change, requiring re-installation. Doable, but annoying.
I much prefer Time-Serts or other "locking" solid inserts.
I just did my niece's BMW a couple weeks ago. The Time-Sert system is quite ingenious and was a piece of cake with proper care, but did take about 3 hours as I was being super careful. Definitely need a borescope or VideoStik to make sure nothing is left in the combustion chamber!!!
Video Stik: $250
Time-Sert kit and inserts: Under $150
So for under $400, I can do quite a few of my own. And the Video Stik is an awesome tool to have around! I've used it for several things - like finding dropped bolts and tools that fell into dark holes (the magnet is really handy!) and tracing/running wires in my house.
If a valve is open far enough for the tap to hit it, you can probably see it through the plug hole with the Video Stik looking straight in. However, the Video Stik comes with a clip on right angle mirror so you can see to the side and make absolutely sure they are closed.
