Hey folks quick question for anyone with experience with this issue, I have a 98 F 150 that has started what I call pinging, took it to a mechanic and he tells me I have a cylinder with low compression 80lb compared to 150 on all other cylinders. Would it be be best to rebuild or replace this motor?, this is the first issue I have had with this engine.
If any loss of power it would be minimal, 140,000 miles, it also ticks very loudly when cold at idle but when it warms up it stops ticking. When it is put under load the tick is constant.
Do not overlook the basics. The tick could be an exhaust manifold leak, which is REAL common to happen. Look in over the wheel and under the inner fender and see if all the nuts and studs are still on the manifold. Also check the connection between the manifold and the pipe, each one has 2 mounting bolts-studs ( they may look like pencil lead by now). The ping is common also, especially in winter. Clean your MAF sensor and run some higher octane and see what happens. Also that small sensor in the intake ductwork, downstream from the MAF, that is the IAT (intake air temperature). I changed that on mine and it really solved the ping. It is a cheap sensor and super easy to change. Good luck!...
In addition to what is written above, mine also does what yours does at startup- normal for these trucks. It also ticks sometimes in the hot months when under load as well. I was thinking major problem last summer, but as the winter months came, it went away, and the truck still runs like a champ - 150,000+. As also mentioned, I think I broke some part of the exhaust manifold mount when I was towing a boat and the hot weather causes the expansion of the leak causing the ticking. I think the cold kept the problem to a minimum. But once again, should not be a significant issue if your case is similiar. It could be something major, but these engines can have a lot of minor issues that might cause concern.
maybe try a leakdown test incase u got a bad valve or somethin long those lines i think its called a leakdown test? usin compressed air with pis. at tdc...
