I have a 01 5.4 F150 that burns a little oil when I start it up from time to time. I asked my mechanic and he said it was probably a leaking valve seal because I only burn oil after the truck sits over night or extended periods of time. My question is, can I replace the valve seal myself or should I just let the professionals work their magic? I have access to the craft shop on post so I should have the tools but I have never done anything more than tune ups and other small projects that never involved engine work. Also when I changed the spark plugs, the front two on the passenger side had what appeared to be oil on them. Not sure how important this is to my question but just wanted to get all the info out there.
It is not a terrible job but you need an air compressor to keep the combustion chamber pressurized so the valve won't drop. That is incredibly rare on a modular made after '95 though. Usually with leaky seals you get smoke after the engine idles, especially when pulling away from stop lights. The '92-'94 Crown Vics are notorious for this and IIRC crownvic.net has a how to on this procedure.
My '92 has it bad and I just replace the plugs more often, kind of annoying with a cloud of smoke but other than that it isn't a terrible thing for the engine.
Well I wasn't sure if it was a big issue because it burns about a quart of oil in about 3-4 weeks. I was just curious how much work it would take to get to the seal or if I should even need to worry about it. the truck has about 120k on it so i am not surprised if have little issues with it. As long as it doesn't have any serious long term issues with it burning oil i will probably continue doing nothing about it.
