i agree, i can recall there were pickups in the H.S. parking lot with gun in the rear window gun rack, no one thought a thing of it. back then we had fear (actions=consequences) these days, kids have no fear, and alot of adults have fear of doing what they should. once i disciplined my child in a store, someone had the nerve to say something about it, i asked if they wanted to be next. they shut up after that. yes things were beeter backin the day. personal responsibility seems to have left the building....
Just yesterday I yelled at a student in my small engines class.
I yelled because:
I tell them everyday at the beginning of class that the expectation is that they remain at their own work station and to work only on their own engines.
I observed him at another student's work station.
He was "helping" the other student by installing valve cover bolts which have a torque spec of (guessing without looking it up) about 80 in lbs.
He was not using a torque wrench.
I saw him bearing down on the ratchet with his upper body and shoulder as if he were going to tighten it as hard as he could.
That was when I yelled at him to stop before he stripped/broke the bolt.
I then reminded him that he was not where he was supposed to be, doing what he was supposed to be doing, at which time he said:"Don't yell at me!" which is pretty much the exact wrong thing to say to me when I am finally to the point where I have to yell at a student.
So, I continued to yell at him, citing all of the different things he was doing that he was not supposed to be doing. When I finished he said very deliberately and loud and clear for everyone to hear: "F*** you."
Now, when I went to school, the very thought of saying such a thing to a teacher would never even enter my thoughts. And if it had, and I blurted it out, I would very likely have found myself picking myself up from the floor.
But no. I am reduced to "writing him up". He did get an out of school suspension, but I don't know for how long.
I am waiting to hear from the parent who, I am sure, if history serves as any kind of predictor, will attempt to berate me and blame me for the incident.
Just a day in the life on the front lines in the war against ignorance.
When I went to HS, (long ago), the principal had a paddle, and knew how to use it. And you stood a good chance of gettin a second lickin when you got home. Today, think lawsuit.........too damn bad things ain't like they were.
Benjamin Franklin: Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” (Nov 11 1755, from the Pennsylvania Assembly’s reply to the Governor of Pennsylvania.)
or the teacher would smack you across the hand with a ruler when you were not paying attention,my dad got that everyday out of school supensions dont work its like a vacation not a punishment,i couldnt even have a logging chain, shovel, slege hammer,or an axe in the back of my truck without getting a detention,i graduated 3 years ago from high school

Kid dips cat's tail in gasoline and lights it on fire.
1957: People laugh and feel sorry for the cat.
2007: 90% of FTE members suggest the kid should be killed.
Now, I don't advocate cruelty to animals of any kind, but the price paid should also fit the crime.
Are you suggesting that the people laughing at the situation is a fitting punishment?
So know the kid has figured that setting fire to a cat is good for a few laughs,so why not set fire to a retirement home,a bunch of wheelchair bound seniors dying in a blaze ought to get a bunch of laughs.
Kill the kid,no,but let him feel a little pain and suffering, just so he understands the concept completely.......

i would light the kid's *** on fire and make him run around for a while until im done laughing at him then put him out and ask did you learn a lesson from this
Today its nothin but ingnorance, and self absorbed people livin in a celebrity wanna be society. Its so pathetic. This new generation Y is the most retared I have ever seen. They can't go 2min. without wanting to update their stupid facebook page of what they did in the last half hour, or I am going to FL. to party. So dumb. But think about it, the parents had gone soft on the kids lettin them do whatever they want. Even at times they are kinda scared to discipline(sp) them correctly, meaning they might go to jail for even smacking them, to be taught a lesson.
I'd light his *** on fire; that's for sure. But I would really try to get him to understand a more mature view of the world around him and how he interacts with it. Don't get me wrong, I'd bust a big buck or a mope fellon in an instant.
It's that essence, fact, reasoning, rationalizing of what is right and wrong, just and unjust that I am trying to put my finger on. I think I have a good 'feel' for it, but if you asked me to write it down, well I think I'd have a problem doing it...

Hey. Don't lump us all in together please.
I'm 16 (born in '92) and I got my azz whupped when I screwed up. I had a summer job last year when I was 15 and I ended up picking up another kid's hours as well because he was completely incompetent.
That is me and MY truck in my avatar. That was taken in December. I paid the 7300$ in full up front. It was 100% my money that I'd worked for and saved up. Everything I have I worked for and bought myself.
There's another guy who I believe is a year or two older than me who also hangs out in the 7.3 section who works on his family's farm.
We are the extreme minority in our generation, but not everyone in Gen. Y is a bunch of braindead idiots needing constant approval from everyone else.
Let's think about this. Constantly saying what you're doing on Facebook is just seeking constant approval from your peers. It's sad really...
What's even sadder is that people like me who actually go out and do work are made fun of for working.
I worked on a dairy farm for a while so people will tell me "Go milk a cow."
