I'm a ways off from getting to paint... but need some alternate thoughts on what color(s) to use on the engine parts i'm taking off, cleaning up, and putting back on... The truck is a '49 F1 w/ a 226 engine. I'm planning on going with a candy apple red body or a slightly darker "cherry apple red" that the body guy showed me a while back. The accent pieces and running boards will be gloss black instead of chrome.
So for the engine compartment I'm thinking I'll do gloss black on the firewall and inner fenders and also some high temp gloss black on the engine block as well. But what about the other parts?
Carb - leaving it alone, just clean it.
Intake/Exhaust manifold - not sure what color
Head - black to match block?
Water pump assembly - black like block
Oil Filter Assembly - take off and have painted to match body color "red"
water pump pully - match body color "red" ?
Valve cover vent pipe - match body color "red" ?
Air Filter (if I find one that fits) - match body color
color of plug wires? I think with a black block, I'd go with red plug wires. Don't paint the carb, don't want anything to stick. Most air filters are painted black, but again your block is black. I'd go with the grey for exhaust manifold, and black for intake if it's stock. Matter of fact, it seems most all what you have planned is a "negative" image from what most folks do...red block and black accessories. Do as you like, we'll still like it
I'm going with PPG Clover Green Pearl body color ( or similar green) with body color firewall, and black inner fenders, matching body color block (8BA) and a bunch of chrome....nothing too extraordinary.
I like having things be a bit out of the norm but not too extream. I really like the idea of the exhaust and intake manifolds being different colors, and will certainly take that advice! As for the plug wires I was looking for a nice red wire, but if the color is "off" it might look better with just black, have to wait and see for that. as i sit here day dreaming about what it will look like the head color keeps popping back into the for thoughts... i keep switching it from black, to silver, to candy apple red... but i dont think they make a high temp candy apple red paint
When i finally get to body colors, my truck will be Screaming yellow clear with gloss black accents. With that in mind I painted my engine the same way. Yellow block and heads the rest gloss black accents. Pics in gallery. One thing I'm going to do to is no chrome anywhere. Going with a black or charcoal interior for seats & door panels.
Something you might consider as an option in the engine compartment - or at least the firewall (while not original paint) is Zolatone!
This was used EXTENSIVELY in vehicles - especially older busses during the 50s. It's very similar to what they call "Spatter Paint" but much more subtle and better looking.
One of the nice things about it is it covers up all sins, and it hides dirt very well. It looks period correct. Most paint shops carry it - it's a little expensive, but waht automotive products aren't these days.
Here is a picture of my cowl that I did in the Zolatone just to give you an idea. It comes in black with spots, different blues and green with spots, etc.
Ahhhhh! the site reduced it down....It's in my #2 gallery if you want to see it better.
