I am planning on sandblasting my 57 F100 frame BUT not the whole thing at one time. I am ready to do the front third (front bumper to just under the firewall) And then the back third lastly removing the cab and doing that section. I've been told that it will be noticable where my laps are and that a good seal will not happen where the laps are allowing water to migrate between the first and second coat. Is this true. I really need to do this in thirds.
Secondly my inner fenders on my 57 F100 are pitted in places and even have some small pinholes. After sandblasting I want to coat them with POR-15 and then after they tack spray them with a epoxy hi-fill primer. I was told that then I could spray hi-fill primer till I've filled the pits. After everything is filled I could recoat wityh POR-15 and have a permanent fix.
Not sure on doing the frame in multiple stages, but por15 makes a gray? paint (check their website) that supposedly fills small pinholes. You may not need the hi fill primer.
No problem with doing it in thirds, I did mine in halves and it worked fine. Por15 might be able to fill small holes without any help, it's pretty thick stuff and I was able to fill some small pinholes in mine.
Don't worry about water at the edge, just sandblast the por15 back about 1/2" or so when you start the next area. Por15 blasts off easy.
Don't be afraid to use JB weld to fill small pits. I weld small holes and fill flush with the JB weld. It will sand smooth and can be primed/painted over.
Thanks for the reply. Besides blasting back a half inch did you do any thing else to POR15 that was allready applied like sanding or roughing the surface? Did you mask off the area you did not blast and then leave it on for painting the new POR15?
