As long as the barrel is over 18in long from the end of the chamber (barrel beyond the business end of chambered shell) it should conform to BATF regs. Stock should not matter(in this state anyway) check your states regs to be sure......Dont hide it under seat, thats a illegal concealed weapon in almost all states unless you have a Concealed handgun license.

X2 what Old93junk said. Must have a CCL to carry a gun hidden in your vehicle. Of course if you don't tell anyone, who'll know.

So my Colt Cobra revolver laying on my truck seat is legal, but if I stick it under the seat it's not. (?)

In Cali, it better be unloaded when its in plain sight, under the seat it is a illegal concealed weapon unless you have a carry permit.

As I understand it, a carry permit is issued by the county and it is valid, only in that county. Is that right?

HERE is a summary of Nevada's gun laws

" If an individual is not hunting, loaded firearms may be carried in a vehicle. During hunting, all firearms must be entirely unloaded before being placed in the vehicle (not after!). Handguns must not be concealed on a person in a vehicle unless that person holds a CCW permit issued in Nevada. Handguns must not be concealed on or by a person's body unless that person holds a CCW permit issued in Nevada. This is true while driving, also. "

" A concealed weapon permit may be obtained by a Nevada resident who is 21 years of age or older by:
1. Successfully completing a CCW course approved by your County Sheriff. The Sheriff will have a list of approved instructors and how to contact them. NSRPA also maintains a list of these instructors for each County.
2. Completing the forms provided by the Sheriff’s Office and submitting them with the appropriate fee. A set of fingerprints and photograph will be taken, as well as certain other information, such as your driver’s license number.
3. Upon the successful completion of the background check, a concealed weapon permit will be issued to you for up to two handguns you specify in your application. "

In Indiana, you only have to be 18 years of age to possess any gun. If it's a long gun, you can keep it anywhere in the vehicle, loaded or unloaded.

You only need a concealed carry permit to have a loaded handgun in your vehicle.

Gotcha. I never got one, because I doubt that a police officer (who else could ask about it?) from another jurisdiction is going to accept the permit.

In most states CCWs are valid statewide and in selected states as well.

Your Nevada CCW permit is also valid in 14 other states. Here's a link that helps with the reciprocity laws: Handgunlaw.us : CCW Map

I haven't heard of a permit being valid just in the county but that doesn't mean it's not true somewhere. Most are valid statewide as the previous post states. You have to apply thru the county sheriff in the county in which you live and they are quite insistent that your address be current and consistent with all your ID's. If you are abiding by the laws in your state I don't think the authorities want to hassle you for the fun of it. They have too many bad guys to chase.

Dave,

Are you sure about that?? (Red boldface text.)

I've always read that the 18" was from the (closed/locked) breechface to the muzzle and 26" minimum overall length.

I'll re-check.

The reason I say this, is that if measured from the business end of a shotshell, that could vary because of shotshell length.
A 2-3/4" shell is that length when opened. (2-1/2" to 2-5/8" closed.)
That could have a bearing on the barrel length.
(There's also those new-fangled 2-1/2" length shells, plus 3" and 3-1/2" shells.)
