Yes bilstien is the top shock. Rancho RS5000 is a decent choice for little money, it's pretty much the eqv of a monroe or procomp base model.

+3 for the Bilsteins. Changing out the shocks on a SD is very easy; you don't even need to remove the tires to do it.

+4 on the Bilstiens. I just put the heavy duties on mine. I got them at shockwarehouse.com for a good price, but just before the buy 3 get 1 free promotion.

With a lift, you would probably want the 5100's. They are just a little more but not significant.

And they were not hard to install. I didn't even take off the tires. The hardest part was the rear (the rear have a bit more tension to compress to get them on). But I just attached the upper, then pulled on the strap (like a bow) to compress the shock until I could slide in the lower bolt. On the front, I turned the wheels all the way to the right so I could access the bolt on the bottom. Hooked up the bottom than pushed the top down and slid it over the pin as it came back up.

The ride is significantly better. I took it out on a washboardy gravel road that would jar your teeth out and at 30 MPH is was pretty smooth. Not that you couldn't feel the washboard, you could just keep your teeth.
