stub axle is the piece going from outer U-joint (or only U-joint in D60) to lock out. With out that U-joint and stub axle you would not be able to steer. D50 or D60.

Ok I was just going by my Haynes manual in a exploded view they refer to the stubshaft as the part attached to the center section for the the right side axle its the pivot for the ttb front rear.

So basically whether a 44 or 50, it should be stamped underneath the yolk?

1989 F250HD 351W 8501-9000lbs GVWR... Dana 44HD front (my mud truck)
1987 F250 6.9L DIESEL... Dana 44HD front
1991 F250 7.3L DIESEL... Dana 44 HD front
1985 F250 460... Dana 44HD front
1984 F350 6.9L DIESEL... Dana 50 front
1995 F250 351W... Dana 50 (Truck I got the D50 from for my mud truck)

The only thing these trucks all had in common was they are all regular cabs. I have yet to see, IN PERSON, a pre-91 F-250 with the dana 50 front axle stock. Maybe it was an option, as ive never seen an ex cab up close from this era, so i dont know for sure.
Funny you say that, as I've only seen a few F250s with the 44HD. I had an 82, regular cab, 351w, auto with the Dana 50.

Currently I have a 86, ext cab, 460, 4 sp, GVW 8800, front axle GAWR 3920 that also has the 50.

Growing up, me and my buddies messed around a fair amount with these style 80s style trucks. I know of at least one that was a regular cab 460 4spd with the 50.

So the idea it has to do with some engine configuration, or cab, or even axle rating is misleading. One thing I have personally noticed is that the trucks I've seen with the 44HD also has the semi-floating Sterling rear axles. The trucks with the 50 all had the Dana 60 rear (early models) or the full floating Sterling 10.25/50 rear axle.
