yesterday I had driven my 78 f150 a good distance from home since I put my new gas tank on. There was a incident were I had to speed up when I did as I slowed down my truck started to cut off it finally did.I got it cranked I was low on gas so I filled it up and got back on the road. I made about 2 miles it cut off again. I sat there a few minutes and kept turning it over it finally cranked then I drove it home. I noticed when pressing the gas there was a slight pop from the carb. Could it be trash in the line ,fuel pump ,inline fuel filter ,or the float. I think it's a 2150 2 bbl. motorcraft (autolite) on a 351m.
Was the pop heard while the engine was running? If so, it could be backfiring out through the carb. I would check your fuel filter, and if you got some extra fuel line attach it to the output side of your fuel pump(the side that goes to the carb) and run it into a bucket, crank over the motor until the fuel starts flowing into the bucket and check and see how well it flows, it is a bearly trickling out you might have a blockage in the line. If it pours out a nice slow, but steady rate, you probably don't have a problem there. You might just need to rebuild the carb, but that "poping" you describe needs to be diagnosted first, with could mean timing is out. Hope this helps.
thanks to all who gave advice I checked the timing and it was off I reset it. I think that solved the problem. I'm going to drive it around tomm. if it did'nt solve it I will check fuel line.
I have experienced the same thing and it was trash in the fuel filter. Don't know where it came from but the clear glass filter came in handy that time.
I bought one of those glass filters once, I put it on my LTD and it leaked, the glass wasn't sealed on there correctly, it was a spectre brand, won't buy those anymore.
