OK, so my wife is driving an 02 'Sploader AWD, 4.0 SOHC. Already replaced timing chains (actually the whole engine), new rear end, etc etc. She calls me at work yesterday saying it won't start "nothing" happens. I'm on duty for 24 hrs (Firefighter) so I send a buddy over to check it out. He discovers that the starter mounting flange is BROKEN, and the starter is just flopping around.
I got off work at 0700 this morning, ran over to where it was sitting, ran throught the "simple" checks first, ie relays, fuses etc etc. All in good order. Ran a jumper wire from the starter housing to GROUND and she fires right up. Drive it home, replace starter and battery. Battery was the original, just over 100,000 miles so I figured it was time. She fires right up like new now, good to go.
My question is this. Has anyone encountered this before? I've had broken starters before, but usually on our drag cars that take a pounding, and asking them to do things they weren't designed for. But on a bone stock 4.0 daily driver for the wife? What the hell happened?
