Hey guys,
Anyone got a picture of the inner fender area where the hood hinges on a 73 highboy. Isn't this a spot that is bad to rust? I'm looking at a truck that looks like it might have an after market cover over that area. If I'm lucky, I will be driving it home soon!
Thanks, Joel
Where exactly is the plate? Some trucks did have a reinforcing plate in that area to keep the hood from going through the windshield in a front-end collision, but I'm not sure of the years. I thought it was later years though; I don't think a 73 would have it unless it has been swapped over.
Does this cover go over the inner fenders and bolts go through it? If so, sounds like it was factory. Those were installed if you ordered one with the factory topper.
All of mine (12, picking lucky # 13 tomorrow) have galvanized inner fenders, although some of them look "blackish"The part that bolts to the firewall is plain steel. The only ones that are any different are the Broncos, which have an extra bracket on the inside of the fenserwell and that little gizmo ( I believe that's the correct technical term ) that is mounted in the center of the firewall and fits into a doohicky ( more hi-tech phrasiology, try to keep up ) thats mounted on the hood

The '79 Bronco extras is what the OP was asking about.
It's to reinforce the hood in an even of a crash and to protect the weak fiberglass toppers back there. Older hoods become projectiles when it gets involved in a front-end collisions. 78/79 were the only years which the hoods would crumple. Also, if equipped with the reinforced brackets, the upper bracket on the hood hinges will pierce the cowl so the hood will stay in its original place.
