472 Big Block Engine

Here it goes...

Me and my sis just recently just saved up enough money and bought ourselves a truck... It is a 1951 f-3 longbed... the original flathead engine was removed and replaced with a 196- 260 y-block... it does not run it and from we can tell its gone...

Anyway one of our neighbors has offered us one of his engines and an automatic tranny (he rebuilds cars as a hobby) it is a Ford 472 Big Block... We plan on using this truck to drive to work and to haul our horses to trails, competitions, etc.
and an automatic tranny and bigger engine sound good (he is offering it all for $100
) but he said to think it over for it does need to be rebuilt...So now that thats done what is everyones opinion of this particular engine? Was it known for any problems? Will it be sufficent to tow? etc. If you guys need any more information I'm sorry but thats all I know about it.
Sorry for being so chatty,
Thanks.
472? No such Ford engine.
If it's a 427, some investigation would be in order.
If it's a 460 with an overbore, that might be interesting, except that would mean it's already .060 over, and you may or may not be able to bore it one more time since it needs a rebuild
If it's a 477 Super Duty, run. (is it as large as a house?)
There was a Cadiddlak 472.....
What year, what was it supposed to be out of, any identifying numbers on it? Does the intake manifold extend under the valve covers? Are there bolt heads into the sides of the block just above the pan rail, 3 on each side?
Out of a Buick? Makes no sense. If someone was drag racing a Buick, maybe someone would have done that, but that would be weird.
OK, so when you look at it:
--does the intake manifold go under the valve covers. If so, it is probably an FE engine, the engine family of the 427 and many others.
--on the driver side of the block, look for the number "352" in raised letters. Another FE clue.
--on the sides of the block below the engine mounts, look for bolt heads just above the pan rail, 3 on each side.
--what material is the intake manifold? What kind of carb? 1 carb or 2?
--what do the exhaust manifolds look like? Can you see runners, or just a flat looking rectangular tube?
--any numbers in the castings will help. Any tags, especially one located on the intake manifold near the coil. Any tag on the carb.
IF it is a 427, it could be worth getting, most likely for the parts. Any servicable 427 would be worth quite a bit. If it's not running, it could be grenaded inside, but still have usable parts like heads & manifolds.
If you can post some pics you will have an answer pretty quick.

Sorry about that your right it is a 427... as far as any more information... all he told us was that he had taken it from a Buick... I'll see if I can get any more info... but for now thats all I have
