I have a 1976 2WD F-150 with AT and a 390 big block. I love this old truck! It was getting bad mileage and dieseling when I'd shut it down. It has the Autolite 2 barrel 2100 carb. I rebuilt it myself and was amazed at the improvement! These are very well designed old carbs, very easy to rebuild at home. For a $20 rebuild kit, two cans of Wal-Mart carb cleaner and 3 hours of work, , I got what feels like a brand new engine.
The "power valve" on the bottom of the bowl was leaking. After discovering this and fixing it, I changed the oil right away to avoid damage from dilution by the gas that was running through that leaking valve. The main thing to get right is the float adjustment. The furnished paper gauge works fine done dry, if you are careful to get it right as per the kit instructions.
Almost anyone can rebuild this carb and I recommend it if you see these problems.
