grinding

hey looking into getting a 02F350SD 2wd 5.4L 4.10ls. its got 158k and drives good. the trans is a little slow from R to D and D-R but i think a fluid change will help that. the only thing is sometimes when driving it will make a grinding noise for about 2 sec then stop. i drove the truck for about 100 miles already and it only did this 3 times. it sounds like its coming from the front-middleish part of the truck. any one have any idea what it might be?

Could be the driveshaft carrier bearing is getting tired. This ties the two part drive shafts together, sounds about right for the location you described.

I would also be concerned about this change from D-R, R-D. Sounds like the trans has to pump up the fluid. Years ago I would say the front pump is going out and needs to be serviced. But that was many generations ago. But sounds to me like it has to build pressure for some reason.

For the grinding, it sounds like the needle bearing that the front axle stub rides in - the "inner spindle bearing". Does it do it when you hit a bump?

Lock the hubs manually and drive it around and see if it does it.
