I posted in the general diesel discussion forum and it was suggested to post here regarding a 1985 F350 4 door DRW truck I am interested in purchasing. It is only selling for $650 and the dealer states it needs an injector pump. I am told I can get one online for under $500 but also to post here, as these old diesels are mis-diagnosed quite often.
I have never owned a diesel powered vehicle, and so I don't know what else it could be besides the pump. The truck is not local, and I have not yet contacted the dealer regarding it, as I want to do some research first to see what I am getting myself into here.
These are rugged old last forever motors how many miles are on it.
If maintained these last 300,000 and more you probably wont be able to get any records with it but you can look at how the rest of the truck was taken care of it will tell you something about the previous owner.
It would help if you knew what symptoms it has as far as the pump goes it could be a simple air leak.
There a truck like you described for sale here in MN. Needs a pump and got some serious rot on the box. Otherwise seems like a good deal even if for parts.

Yeah, that is the truck I am looking at. I don't know anything about it other than they say it needs an injector pump. And it has some rust spots. Interior looks good, and I see no major body damage. However it is quite a distance from me, which would mean adding the fuel costs to get it here to the price. I would definitely want to be sure an injector pump was the only thing it needed to make that long trek back.
It has 114k miles on it. I am going to send the dealer an email asking about it, and why they think it needs an injector pump.

Buyer beware just be cause a truck looks well maitained does not mean it is. I have a cherry looking f350 with a boat anchor for an engine to prove it. Some people will take excelent care of the meaning less and over look something as important as coolant aditives then when the cylinderwall gets pitted all the way threw dump some block seal in and trade it in then I come along and buy it.
That motor is probly solid with the miles that are on it. My best advice if you truly are intrested in it is to tell them you'll take it pending a compression test. You can probly pay to have a local garage do the test befor you even go out there. Its cheap insurance.
Yes, I definitely want to have it checked out prior to picking it up. It will need to make a 1500 mile trip home, and I don't need it breaking down somewhere in the middle of that.

Wish I could help, however, that truck is about 3 1/2 hours south of me...
The box is probably shot, looks like a gaping rust hole above the rear fender, although the paint has decent shine. The cab looks ok but trucks here in MN hide the rot well. For the price, thats a good deal even if the running gear is the only solid part.
Yeah my main concern is the running gear. The body rot is not a problem, as I can get another bed here locally. Att looked like a reflection of some trees on the box, but the more I look at it the more it looks like it is rusted through. Also looks like rust on the rear edges of both doors. Still, considering it is 24 years old, and only has 114k miles on it there is a good chance the drivetrain is in good condition. And I like the price
There was a truck very similar to the truck you are describing here in town (southern Oregon). As I recall, the price was only like $800. But I don't think it was rusted at all. If you are looking, I can see if it is still available.
