Dumb Question? Possibly..... I am getting ready to change the oil for the first time in my new truck, and I wonder how (if) the system will know I changed it - right now the display says something like "51% percent oil life", and unless there is some kind of sensor (microswitch?) in the oil pan or under the filter, how else does it get reset? Danged electronic stuff is smarter than me - used to be I just kept track of how many miles I drove on a piece of paper in the glovebox!
Most of these change oil messages are based on engine hours or miles.
Most have a seset procedure.
On my 04 Lincoln, you check the status moinitor and when Oil life comes up it says push and hold reset. Do that and it will reset to 100%. You might have to push reset once and let go then push and hold. depends.
On a 96 chebby, you turned the key on but did not start the engine. You pushed the gas pedal three times and said, "there's njo place like home" and it would reset.
Boy I am glad My 99 does not have that many electronics. It is complicated enough for Me This EFI, ESOF, SOHC, ETC. is very confusing It was so much easyier when it was 302 4 barrel 4x4.

If I remember right you hit reset when it shows the oil life index and it will instruct you to hold it down if you want to reset it. I know on a gas engine it is all based on mileage.
