I just finished up installing a new fuel pump and my truck is starting harder than it used to. When I say hard, I mean when it's cold it takes a couple of cranks of about 5 seconds before it will fire.
When you replace the fuel pump, do you get a bunch of air in the system that takes a while to work it's way out? I've driven it around 15 miles since I replaced it. It fires up faster when the engine is warmed up, but still not quite as quick as before the new pump went in.
One thing I did notice is that the IPR connector seems loose (the connector is clipped okay, but the whole thing that it's plugged in to seems to wiggle) Doesn't seem right, but I've never touched it before.
The truck runs great otherwise. The only code I get is because I unplugged the EBPV. Oh, and I just replaced all the glowplugs, harnesses and VC gaskets as well.
Any idea what could be causing this new hard start issue?
the air in the fuel system will work itself out, as for the loose IPR is it the entire IPR or just the electrical connection? If the IPR is loose you might need to tighten the nut on it, or get a IPR seal kit
Thanks guys. It seems like it's the whole IPR, but I need to look more closely at it since I don't know how it goes together. It was just something I happened to notice when I was looking at where all the wires attached to the fuel bowl went and I thought it seemed weird that it had so much play in it.
One other thing I forgot to mention was that I took out the fuel heater when I cleaned the cannister. It literally fell off the metal plate so I figured it shouldn't be rattling around in there. Would removing the heater cause a harder starting scenario? Seems like most people here say it doesn't really do much. It doesn't get very cold here, usually mid 30's in the evening.
Just a quick followup, the hard starting turned out to be a bad GP relay. I replaced it with the Stancor and it fires right up.
The loose IPR appears to just be the part where the wire connects to it. The tin nut on the back is tight. I don't see a way to keep the thing from moving around, so I'm not going to worry about it for now.
